QCA holds English Fest

Last November, Quezon City Academy celebrated the English Fest 2011 with its theme “Developing Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic Skills through Poetry Interpretation” spearheaded by the Bureau of English Studies director Denise Rose Cuadro and adviser, Ms. Juliet Cubita.

It has been a culture in QCA to have group presentations of literary excerpts for each year-level. Section Dangal bagged the first place over Agap A in the first year level in the speech choir of “I am Proud to be a Filipino” by Toribia Mano. The competition between them was really tight, judges announced so. For the second year level, Ageo presented a poem enactment of “The Taj Mahal” and took home the bacon over Amos. The third year level showcased their talents in a doe-chamber theater of the classical play “The Tempest” written by William Shakespeare. Antimony won over Gold. Of course, the fourth year level was not left behind for their interpretations of Tomas C. Ongoco’s “Doctor Faustus and the devils”, also in a doe-chamber theater performance. Abad Santos prevailed in the presentations over Dagohoy.

Aside from the literary excerpts for each year-level, the bureau came up exciting activities that showed the students’ capabilities and talents namely: Spelling Bee, Declamation (1st and 2nd year level), Oratorical Speech (3rd and 4th year level), Dramatic Reading (1st and 2nd year level), Extemporaneous/Impromptu Speech (3rd and 4th year level), Speech Writing and Delivery, and Literary Bee were organized for the improvement of the English language in campus and in students’ every day lives. Eliminations for the individual competitions were held last November 22 and November 23 for the group presentations.

The winners on the said activities were as follows: Althea Niña Auditor (Agap B), Alnie Aderes (Ester), Veniece Kenia Aquines (Antimony) and Yvonne Dela Cruz (Benitez) for the literary bee; Janela Andrea Antonio (Agap A) and Camille Mirandilla (Ageo) for the story telling; Hubert Howell Lacsi (Felipe) for the Speech writing; Christian Almirol (Antimony) for the oration; Jamie Garcesa (Antimony) for the extemporaneous speech and Irene Reyno (Abad Santos) in the spelling bee.

The judges were QCA alumni; they were Daryll Whell David (2004), Krisha Crizel Macaraig (2006), Rommel Balbarino (1989) and Kathryn Joy Javier (2008). They were really amazed by the students’ presentations.

“I really enjoyed the program. The presentations of each year-level were very amazing,” Thoraya Lazaro of Daniel stated.
